Redlands Compete in the 2nd Division Under 19’s competition which meant that many of the students were playing in the division above their age group. With 19 teams in the division playing in three pools the competition began on Friday morning where Redlands played Balmoral State High School winning 2 sets to 1. The following game was against St Paul’s College, Bald Hills. Once again Redlands were successful 2 sets to 0.
Saturday saw a very busy schedule with three games. Djarragun from Cairns again saw success 2 sets to 0. After a break the next opponent was Benowa From the Gold Coast again the result was 2 set to 0 in favour of Redlands. The final game was played against Kingaroy State High School continuing the successful run of results – 2 sets to 0. Thus the pool games finished with Redlands on top with out a loss.
The top team from each pool then played off to see who would play for Gold, Silver and Bronze. Redlands again played Benowa with a repeat of the win from the pool games 2 sets to 0 to Redlands.
So to the final where Redlands took on the team from Cleveland State High. Circumstances of the draw allowed this game to be played over five sets. With Cleveland taking the first set Redlands responded in kind taking the second, thus setting up the pattern of play. At the end of 4 sets the score was 2 sets all with the final set to be played first to 15. In the end Cleveland State High won through.
Leaving the competition with a Silver medal was a great achievement for the team keeping in mind there will be 8 players from this team available for the competition next year. The experience gained for all the players will stand them in good stead for the challenges of Schools Cup 2009.
